What’s the difference between permanent makeup and microblading?

“What’s the difference between permanent makeup and microblading?” is a question my Client Services team hear often. We understand that it can feel a little confusing! In theory, microblading is permanent makeup – but the treatment is performed very differently. In today’s post, I’ll tell you all about how the two techniques differ and show you a few examples.

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing. When we say ‘permanent makeup’, we refer to adding cosmetic pigment into the skin. Cosmetic tattooing is very different to regular tattooing. The pigments used are created to fade out naturally and give a softer colour. Also, the needles don’t penetrate the skin as deeply. Some people call permanent makeup ‘semi-permanent makeup’, but it’s not really a term I like to use. The term ‘semi’ suggests that the tattoo will fade completely. However, there will always be remnants of the pigment left over in the skin – no matter how miniscule.

A permanent makeup treatment is carried out using a digital tattoo machine and a combination of different needles. There are so many different needles to choose from which give varied results. From shaded ombre brows to the most realistic hair strokes – our creativity is the only limit.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a method of permanent makeup that is carried out using a handheld tool with ultra-fine needles. Unlike the digital machine, we use the microblading hand tool to create a channel in the skin first. Secondly, we implant the cosmetic pigment.

Microblading is most popular with my younger clients. It became popular amongst celebrities a few years or so ago, and the demand for it hasn’t decreased yet.

Microblading techniques used to be quite limited, so I created my very own tools. They allow myself and my Elite Artists to be as creative as we can be in a digital permanent makeup treatment. This way we get the best of both worlds!
